So it goes

Welcome back, friends. I’m going to try and do two reviews in one, and to try and remember the books because it’s been a while since I’ve read these books. And they are great books. Good use of dead trees. So it goes.

Slaughterhouse-Five or the Children’s Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death

Think of Slaughterhouse-Five as a science fiction anti-war book. In it we’re introduced to Billy Pilgrim. It’s about his experiences during the firebombing of Dresden, and after the war. It really grabs me right from the start, because I like the fact that Billy is an unreliable narrator. You are thrown right into the thick of things, because of time travel.

“So it goes”. Every time someone dies, or death is mentioned, the refrain – “So it goes” is said. For me, I believe it just accepting death and what’s happened. You find that you barely even notice that you’re reading “So it goes” after a while. “So it goes” is written 106 times in the book.

I had never read Vonnegut before, I really enjoyed the Sci-fi aspect of the novel. I never had to deal/worry about being drafted into the military, but this book really helped me to begin to understand war, violence, and death associated war. So it goes.

Cat’s Cradle

According to Wikipedia, Cat’s Cradle is satirical postmodern novel, with science fiction elements.

What? Again like the Slaughterhouse-Five, it’s completely foreign to me. It’s a completely different time. Over a generation apart from my time. For me, it was making fun of religion. Sure, there’s other things going on, but on just one reading, religion is what i took away from it.

Bokononism the religion secretly practiced by the people of San Lorenzo. It’s a very complete and well thought out religion. Example:

Pool-pah: a shit-storm, wrath of god.

Both of these books grabbed me right from the beginning, and kept my attention all the way through. It’s cliche, but I seriously laughed, and cried. So go out to the library, bookstore, wherever, and pick both of these up.

Finger paint the sun

Since it’s Thursday, the second hand store is open. I usually go and check out what books they have. I’ll pick up a book, and then put it down – leaving it to fate. If it’s there the next time I go in, I’ll pick it up. On Tuesday, there was a Jack Reacher novel. I put it back. Today I figured if it was there, I’d grab it.

It was there.

I bring it up to the counter, and the lady said it’s all you can stuff into a bag, it’s $5. Well then. Guess what I did?

“Dude, i filled the cup…”

I figure that if there’s some duds, I’ll bring them back, and then someone else can start the circle all over again.

I could’ve fit a few more in the bag, but nothing was jumping out at me, and I really had to pee. Plus, I still had to get the mail on the way home.

So I turned on some tunes, and started walking. It’s a short walk to the post office, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I’m still getting used to YouTube Music. Aside from the terrible UI, the other wicked annoying thing YTM does is stop after EVERY song. So you’re always going and hitting play. But it’s kinda random. It’ll play 2 or 3 songs, then play one at a time. It’s wicked annoying.

Only a couple hours until Crystal gets home, I can’t wait!

I tried to find them, but they disappeared

I have no idea what’s going on. And I like it.

So far from what I can gather, there’s a pretty neat story in here. It’s about a guy with no memory of who he is, gets kidnapped, and awakens on a ship. That’s as far as I got on the main story – Ship of Theseus

Then, there’s the story in the margin. Jen and Eric. BRING ON ALL THE CONSPIRACY THEORIES!

I did start to read this outside while Shady Acres has their afternoon nap. I think I was out there for maybe (at the most) 20 minutes. Then the neighbours came outside with screeching children and bubbles. Nuf said. So I want in, and read on my bed.

It’s actually not hard to read at all. Only once, I found myself reading the main story, so I had to go back and read the margins.

There’s no pain and there’s no doubt

Awake! Oh, it was nice and cool again last night. Still, I slept mostly on top the blankets. Coffee is the name of the game right now, and let me tell you, this coffee is good. But it’s nice and sunny, and looks like it’ll be a nice day here today.

I managed to mow the lawn yesterday. I did all the edging then ran the ride on back and forth over the yard twice, to make it look nice and uniform. So it should be good for a couple of weeks now.

Other than that, I have some German lessons, and definitely will be going outside to finally start the book. It’s been calling to me!

The contest is still going on for the music lyrics. Just leave a comment on the post with your answer. May the odds ever be in your favour!

Also, head over to chicky.blog and click the coffee cup. Tell em Shawshank sent ya!
