After being a lawful permanent resident of the US for nearly 20 years, I did something stupid in 2018. I took a plea deal in 2019 to avoid jail time. My public defender told me I might have trouble renewing my green card later down the line, but wasn’t aware the plea would void my legal resident status.
I was detained in February of 2020, pending the deportation process, just before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the country. What would have normally been a 6 week process took more than double the typical time. After 105 days, I was formally removed from the US. They drove me across the border and that was the end of my US life.
